Oscar Time...

Oh the perks of being a celebrity. Free clothes, invitations to swanky parties, and lots of schwag! Oh the schwag. It's amazing what sort of free stuff celebrities get at award shows. And, the Oscars supply the crème de la crème of free goodies. Last year's presenters and performers picked up baskets filled with weekend getaways, cashmere pajamas, and a year supply of phone service. Just once, I'd like to see the goodie bags filled beer cozies and pork rinds and watch as chaos ensued.

Since I'll be having some of the girls over on Oscar night for red-carpet fashion analysis, (Who actually watches the awards part anyway??), I thought it would be cute to create some gift bags myself--but on a much more budget-conscious scale. Here's what I'll be including...

1. No free ipods in my bag--but everyone probably has one already. Instead, I'll be doling out these cute ipod covers from Wishing Fish. At $12 a pop, they're much more affordable than the new nano.

2. All the bling without any ka-ching. I love these cluster earrings from Janna Conner. They're on sale at ravinstyle.com

3. These cute little journals from Kate's Paperie are very sweet and they're perfect for playing my favorite game, "The Acceptance Speech". The person who writes the lamest, most longwinded, egotistical speech wins.

It's like Christmas in March at my place!

Fabulous Website of the Week: Sprout Studios

I came across Sprout Studio's website and had to share my find with you all. Lots of handmade goodies here--from glass necklaces with quirky designs, to gorgeous teapots and cute felt pouches--this multi-talented woman can do it all. Take a looksie.

Fornasetti

Looking at the work of Piero Fornasetti is like falling down the rabbit hole. His work takes on the dimensions of dreams. Teapots with eyes, plates with smirking women's faces--these are the types of quirky images that come to mind when I think of the designer. Though his work is produced out of Italy, many of his pieces are listed on Ebay.

Road Trip!

I'm counting down the days until my trip to Portland, Maine (15 days!!). I haven't been there in years, and I can't wait to check out all the new boutiques, art galleries and restaurants that have opened up in that time. One store that I'm really excited to stop by is Angela Adams' home furnishings boutique. She carries the cutest rugs, paper goods and glassware. Plus, her line of handbags are fabulous. If you're nowhere near Maine, you can also shop for her stuff online here.

Maybe it was a Full Moon?

Could it be that the homeless chic trend is finally....FINALLY over for MK?? After spotting this picture in one of my trashy celebrity magazines tonight, I did a double take. Was that really MK in a cute and glitzy Michael Kors dress?? And look-- she finally did her hair and got a tan! Yeah MK--you finally heard our pleas!! (Now, let's work on those split ends...)

Filenes

I can't believe I've been writing on this blog for months now and have never written a post on Filene's Basement. Who got the idea to open an entire floor of designer goodies, many of which are strewn around the store at grossly discounted prices, and then create an atmosphere where shoppers feel the need to vie for the best gems with other bargain buyers?? That's marketing genius my friends!!

If you read this blog, you know I love the thrill of the hunt almost more than the actual purchase itself. (Hello buyer's remorse!) But, this weekend, there was nothing but shopping giddyness when I left Filene's with two bags in tow.

Here's a rundown of what I managed to score...
-Helen Wang lace dress with pink ribbon detail. (Great for a spring wedding I'm attending)
-Black and white stripe cashmere sweater. (I'm a sweater girl--I have more sweaters in my closet than shoes and bags combined.)
-Ben Sherman jean skirt. (My old jean skirt has seen better days)
-Kenneth Cole long-sleeve dress. (Very appropriate for the office)
-Aura silk camisole. (Perfect for under jackets)

Let's Get Straight to Business

I love teeny, tiny, hold-it-in-your-hand sized trinkets. (I have enough tschokas to fill a small closet.) So, it's even better when the small item is something that's actually usable. Hence, I did a bit of swooning when I saw these adorable business card holders from Calliope. Cute, right?

Fabulous Website of the Week: Beautiful Shoes

Recently, I have been uninspired by the shoes that designers are turning out. I want something unique. Something that I know will stand out in a crowd, make a statment, but not be "over-the-top". Since Manolo won't be calling me anytime soon to create a one-of-kind pair of slingbacks, I've taken matters into my own hands....Beautiful-Shoes.com

The website lets you choose from a variety of shoe types: pump, kitten heel, flat, round toe, pointy toe...you get the idea. Then you pick the swatch: suede, calfskin, snakeskin, patent, etc....Decide on a color. And, take your measurements. In 10 to 12 weeks, you'll have a gorgeously crafted pair of shoes made made just for you!

Oh the stressful life of a fashion designer...

I saw this quickie article in New York Magazine tracking what DVF did before her weekend show. Though the magazine calls it a "nerve-wracking day"-- Puhhhllezze. It seems pretty fantastic to me--massage, yoga, walks in NYC...Read on.

7:30 am The day starts badly; I wake up with a headache and therefore avoid my daily meditation. I’m not in a good mood at all; I’m worried about the show and feeling sorry for myself. I check my e-mails, and quickly glance through the papers while cutting a papaya and a kiwi for breakfast.

9 am Paula (DVF President) arrives immediately followed by Nathan (DVF Creative Director), they are a bit concerned by my 3 am unusually alarming e-mails. We discuss the problems and I have a bowl of pomegranates and review the clothes that are still missing.

11 am Eizo, the Japanese shiatsu masseur, comes. He walks on my back for one hour. I feel much better.

noon Time for hair and make-up tests. It goes extremely fast as we know exactly what we want. The hair will be up with headbands and I’ve chosen red lips and a pink cheek.

3 pm I feel claustrophobic with the stress of the day. I go for a walk on the West Side Highway to clear my head and think about the looks.

7 pm I feel better much better now and feel the clothes look very good. I eat dinner and have a glass of wine as I listen to the music for the show and relax.

9 pm Bobby Clenell, my private yoga instructor comes, to help me unwind from the day and prepare for tomorrow. Tomorrow we have fittings all day. We have 40 models in total, so it will be very, very busy.
